As a global collaborator with years of experience in the sports and recreation, construction and polymer-specialty chemicals industry in the areas of IT, product development, process engineering and research and development commercialisation, Martin spends his time on novel concepts that will stretch the boundaries of current thinking and practice. Based on identifying gaps in others’ solutions and offering many sometimes conflicting alternatives and sometimes paradoxical insights, he engages internationally with startups, small-to-medium enterprises (SME) and subsidiaries of multinational corporations (MNC) to identify growth and export opportunities, develop business strategy by way of digital transformation, and commercialize research and development through open innovation.

Lessons for corporates and startups (and vice versa)

No-one can predict winners – but an ecosystem produces them.

Come and join us for engaging conversation about what corporates should consider when trying to engage with a startup ecosystem and why Australia is a perfect ecosystem for European corporates to practice some of these strategies.

Innovation has now become more of a buzzword rather than an outcome resulting from analysis, systems, discipline and hard work. Experts call on big companies to become more entrepreneurial and engage with or act like startups. Nevertheless, there are no quick fixes or shortcuts. Founding a startup is not just about ‘natural creativity’ or ‘risk taking’ – it is hard, disciplined work and practice. Accelerators and incubators around the globe are using the lean launchpad methodology to assist entrepreneurs from customer discovery and defining their value proposition to preparing their pitch (among other things). However, many concepts still remain brilliant ideas but do not proceed from the source of opportunity to a commercial product.

Having worked with accelerators, startups, venture capital firms and corporates around the world, Dr Martin Schlegel will share some of the latest thinking from the various clusters of innovation around the world.

With more than 20 years’ experience in the sports and recreation, construction and plastics specialty chemicals industry in the areas of product development, process engineering and R&D commercialisation across Asia, Europe and the USA, Martin spends his time on novel concepts that will stretch the boundaries of current thinking and practice. He engages internationally with startup organisations, SMEs and subsidiaries of multinationals to identify growth opportunities, develop business model strategies and commercialise R&D in global markets. Martin is an advisor, board member and director.

Capacity is limited, therefore registration by 6 June 2019 is essential.

European Business is excited to invite you to our next networking event hosted by Jura Australia Espresso.

It is not unusual for European brands, with a premium image and well-known household name in Europe, to enter the Australian market with little to no brand recognition. An underestimated, but important dimension, are the cross cultural issues that arise along the way.

George Liakatos, Managing Director of Jura Australia Espresso is sharing the Swiss company’s experience (successes and challenges!) with the European Business community.

We look forward to a discussion around the intricacies of entering, adapting and succeeding as an unknown and the challenges that are particular to the European company-experience Down Under.

The evening includes:

  • A Q&A session with Mr George Liakatos, Managing Director of Jura Australia, discussing Jura’s market-entry experience in Australia, and the strange and wonderful experience of operating a Swiss company in the Australian market
  • A tour of the Jura facilities and presentation of the technology
  • An opportunity to network with your fellow European Business community members over canapés and drinks.

Audience participation and comments are not only encouraged but expected!

The picnic will be followed by a guided tour of the Mirka Moira exhibition in the Heide Museum of Modern Art. This event is different to the ones we normally have and we look forward to sharing this new experience with you.

Mirka Moira was a French-born Australian artist and a central figure in the cultural life of Australia, contributing significantly to the development of contemporary art in this country. The current exhibition ‘pas de deux – drawings and dolls’ is an homage to the artist who recently passed away. The exhibition brings together some of the artist’s most personal work: drawings and soft-sculpture dolls from her home and studio where she kept them close for many decades.

Rochford Wines is a family owned venture located on the Maroondah Highway in Victoria’s oldest grape growing region, the Yarra Valley.

Rochford Wines specialise in high quality, cool climate winemaking in the Yarra Valley. This process imparts distinctive ultra-premium fruit characters to the wines and their traditional winemaking methods ensure not only depth of character, but also some expression of the unique ‘terrior’ of the vineyard.
